Te Tai Ohinga is a dedicated youth hub for young people aged 13–18, located at 203 Willis Street in the heart of Pōneke. Operated by Y Central, it is a safe, welcoming and inclusive place where taiohi can drop in, connect with friends, spend time with supportive Y staff and take part in activities that build confidence, wellbeing and a sense of belonging. The hub includes a social lounge, podcasting room, gaming zone, study spaces and kitchen, all free to use and accessible for people with disabilities.
Gifted by Kura Moeahu, Chairman of Te Rūnanganui o Te Āti Awa, the name Te Tai Ohinga refers to the tides of the sea and to the young people of Pōneke. It reflects the opportunity for local taiohi to grow, connect and thrive in a space created for them, while recognising that young people will always be part of the life of the city, just as the tide will always ebb and flow.
