Te Tai Ohinga Youth Hub
Te Tai Ohinga is a brand new space for young people aged 13-18.
Gifted by Kura Moeahu, Chairman Te Rūnanganui o Te Āti Awa, the name Te Tai Ohinga refers to the tides of the sea and to young people of Pōneke. It speaks to the opportunity for local taiohi to make a resurgence now that a safe space has been created for them. It also captures the idea that there will always be young people in Pōneke, just as the tide will always ebb and flow.
Located at 203 Willis Street, Te Tai Ohinga is a dedicated space for taiohi to come together, create and connect in a safe inclusive and welcoming environment. The design reflects the needs and wants of local taiohi and provides a platform for further inspiration. The space will offer a social lounge area, a podcasting room, gaming zone, study spaces, and kitchen available to use free of charge, and accessible for people with disabilities.
The Y is committed to providing a safe and meaningful place for the next generation to develop and thrive with their peers. Our Advisory Group, made up of eight local taiohi play an important role in shaping the types of programmes and opportunities they’d like the space to offer. The Y will work in partnership with rangatahi from a variety of different backgrounds, listening to their insights and working together to set the direction for the day Te Tai Ohinga opens its doors.
